Can Someone Please Explain?

Why is it that when I tan, my stomach goes to the most gorgeous shade of brown while my legs and arms stay about three shades paler and sort of splotchy? Oh, and the space between my boobs is also super dark. Needless to say, the general viewing public doesn't get to admire my tan.

And yes, I know that tanning is unhealthy. I do. I don't burn, though, and I will limit it to April and May, then hang out in the sun with sunscreen on.

You know what's sad? When I was a kid, I spent so much time outside that my skin was always tan, so I never burned, and I thought I just naturally had darker skin. Once I started spending all my waking hours indoors (sometimes being an adult and having a job kind of sucks, you know? Okay, maybe not sometimes - maybe, like, all the time, but anyway), I discovered that I am actually naturally pale, pasty white, and I can't even get tan anymore. I just go straight to burn if I got outside for any length of time. This has not been a welcome development.

Maybe the tanning booth's lights are getting old and don't work as well except in the very center of the lid? I bet they don't change those bulb things until they burn out, because they are expensive. The OTC full-spectrum bulbs you can buy always state a number of hours that the bulb will emit the full spectrum. After that time the bulbs still light up but they don't send out the full spectrum of light that they are supposed to.

That's all I can think of.

That same thing happened to me when I used to tan. And my face was the first thing to burn. Or fade.

I can only think of one time I was ever in a tanning bed, and that was about 20 years ago.

I used to tan a lovely and even brown, but since I never go outside, I never tan anymore.
My kid can be covered in 40 sunblock and is perfectly brown as a little nut in about 10 minutes, she never burns and her hair gets beautiful highlights.
She may have been born in Texas, but her genes are perfect California girl.

I have some of that gradual tanning lotion, but I never remember to put it on.

My boy is like Buggy's girl. I can always tell which kid he is when swimming, he is the tannest. Even in winter. Brat.

I used to brown up so nicely as a kid. Now I'm also a pasty girl, like the rest of ya.

I used a tanning bed before our cruise. Hated the lay-down ones. Next time I'd try the stand-up one. I got too many back streaks with the lay-down. Otherwise I tanned fairly evenly.

I'm all about tan in a bottle.

Because you have more beta carotene in your blood near your stomach where it sits in the intestines longer than anywhere else in the bloodstream.

You believe me, right?

Of course I do. You ound very scientific, Bravie.

Swami--I don't think the bulbs are old--the tanning place just opened.

I used a "Level Two" bed the past two times and I am noticing a difference. The beds get REALLY hot, though, so I'm not going to do that very often (and it's an extra three bucks a pop, too). I'm bedburned today in a few spots.

Now my upper/ined thighs are super dark (for me) as is my lower back. Again, not areas that ANYONE will ever see. My calves and arms are at least noticeably a little tan now.

Actually, ummmm do you really want me to tell you? You may want to whack me after I do. *grin* Fat tans better.

I think Breezy is right, and tan fat looks better than pale fat

I agree with Buggy, tanned fat looks way better than pasty fat and I am an expert on that!

Tanned muscle looks better than pale fat but of course I don't know that from experience.

On Big Brother, Sheila's neck is striped: tan, white, tan, white. As we, I mean *I* get older, I have to watch that I don't get striped tan marks.

I've been laying out since March trying to get my tan back, but mostly just my arms and legs. I keep my face, tummy and chest covered so as to try to prevent more sun spots (and wrinkles). Every time my face burns, there are more spots. I haven't been to a tanning salon since I was a teenager.

I've noticed the backs of my thighs are the darkest, and I think it's because it's the flattest, biggest area I tan, which would be the same for your tummy, no? Everything else is angled, so it doesn't tan as smoothly.

Fat tans easily? Well, then why the HELL are my calves not tanning? I have wicked fat calves. Blech.
